The NACIVT is just as much a cultural event as a sporting event. There is quite a bit of history to 9-man volleyball and the rules make more sense when you take into account the history of the sport and some of the other rules (when you allow throws, being able to carry the ball becomes quite useful, but for the most part, the game is still "proper" volleyball). I think you have to play 9-man to really appreciate it and I don't think you should be discounting it based on just reading a few things about it. It is actually a much faster paced game than regular 6's (with 5 hitters, you run a tandem and other plays in every possession) and definitely a lot of athleticism is required to play.

I am Chinese and play in various USAV volleyball tournaments and when I first discovered NACIVT volleyball I was quite excited. But then I found out that the court is *slightly* bigger, the net is lower, and there's a total of 9 guys on the court. Sorry, but no thanks and here's why:

1. Reinforces negative stereotypes about Asians. Per their rules, everyone must be of Asian descent. Hmmm...lower net, more people on the court. Yea...Asians aren't athletic enough to play regular volleyball.

2. When are carries legal? Sorry but that's just stupid. Period.

3. Playing outside. It's called "knees" and people need them when they get older. Plus could you imagine spraining your ankle on hard concrete? No thanks.

4. Racist rules. Again, back to the whole Asian descent thing for all players on the team.

Very informative. I have a serious waking up problem in the mornings and I've tried many different things to help me wake up. I think a dual alarm clock is a great invention. I use at least 3 alarms, so a dual alarm would cover two of the regular alarms. Cool. I've been doing my research to find a way to help me wake up better. Look me up if you are interested.

I’m a woman, and I didn’t remotely take offense to your comment.

The fact is, Early Childhood Education is a female-dominated occupation. FACT. Acknowledging it isn’t a stereotype.

Besides that, you weren’t saying that Early Childhood Educators are always women, you simply suggested that to avoid confusion, when a guy posts ECE on a blog, he likely means the Electricity whatever doomihickey thingamabob that you mean when you use that acronym.

I’ll never understand why people will beat the crap out of people for a benign comment like that, and won’t even flinch at the fact that women make 73 cents on a dollar, or are socially ostracized for being single.

And here’s a thought – not acknowledging the fact that our genders pre-dispose us to strengths and weaknesses is to deny our individuality and awesomeness. I may not be able to do a majillion chin ups, but I can comfort the crap out of you when you’re sad and make the world’s best risotto. My partner is the most sensitive awesome person I know, but when there were dead birds on my front step, he was the man for the job.

And here’s a thought, if you are going to rail against the color gender cycle, then don’t get angry when I say that your daughter is very handsome. Seriously, babies look the same when they’re really tiny and if you name your kid something gender-neutral and dress it in green, how am I supposed to know if it’s a boy or a girl?

Kids toys are creepy – no argument here. They are very gender-biased and gross. The boys get to build crap and be superheros and spies and cops, and the girls are mommies and whores. Not good.

But Vince is not a misogynist. Come on, now. Considering all the examples above, you guys should just chill.

Apparently my look can pass as being either Chinese or white washed and the language that people choose to use with me is based on how Chinese my actions are :). The "Chinese"-ness of actions are probably determined by the frequency of the same actions by Chinese vs non-Chinese.

It is probably quite common for people of any race to randomly walk along Spadina and buy mangoes off the street, but probably not many white washed asians buy tea fish.

Ooh that's weird. I thought I was the only one. I started doing this in Grade 12 (September 2006) so it hasn't been quite as long as you have.

How long before the loud one do you set the quiet one? It used to work for me in high school, with the quiet 30 minutes before the loud, and it worked especially well during the summer. But for some reason when University started it hasn't always worked :S I'm tired half the time.

That's strange. Mine clumps into a really hard ball. Not right away though. It's usually loose right away, but after a while when I actually go to scoop it (usually more than an hour after she does it), it's rock hard.
